Where Philadelphia's Musical Theater Comes to Life

2025 Programming

Our 2025 programming is MusiCoLab's most ambitious yet. In April 2025, we bring back our Spotlight Series: a chance for Philadelphia based composers and writers to share 30 minutes of material from their new projects. June will see a celebratory evening of new songs at the New Songs Cabaret. This year's Workshop musical will be Red and Black by Nick Hatcher, Sheridan Merrick, and David Thomas, presented in early August. And our thirteenth New Works Showcase will be presented in November.

See below for more information on each project!

Spotlight Series: 3x30

The second annual MusiCoLab’s Spotlight Series 3x30 took place on Saturday 4/12 and Sunday 4/13 at CSz Philadelphia, 2030 Sansom St. Presented as part of Philly Theatre Week, Spotlight 3x30 featured thirty-minute excerpts from three new musicals being developed by Philadelphia creators:

  • Electric & Benevolent - Jay Purdy’s zany riff on the life of inventor Nikola Tesla, with songs by indie rockers "The Extraordinaires"
  • Lawless - the scandalous story of Charles Dickens and his secret mistress, Nelly Ternan, as told by Charlie Gilbert
  • Elderland - Michael Biello and Dan Martin’s poignant portrait of a community of seniors who reclaim their inspiring lives by sharing their stories

New Songs Cabaret

In our creative community there are dozens of writers making exciting new work for the musical stage. And we want to share this new work at an evening of celebration and community with you on Saturday, June 28, at the Bluver Theater.

Workshop: Red and Black

MusiCoLab's workshop slot is focused on the development of a full-length musical, giving creative teams in our community the opportunity to test their work in front of local audiences. Chosen by committee from multiple pieces presented at a pitch night in early 2025, Red and Black was chosen for this year's workshop. Red and Black was one of three musicals featured in the 2024 Spotlight Series: A Closer Look. We’re proud to support creators Nick Hatcher, Sheridan Merrick, and David Thomas as they continue to develop this musical.

New Works Showcase XIII

Since it's founding, MusiCoLab has proudly presented a dozen showcases of songs from brand new musicals written by the Philadelphia region's growing community of composers and lyricists, performed by the most talented actor-singers. Featuring 10-minute excerpts from new works, this year's New Works Showcase XIII will be presented mid-November.
